Ceramics: all
Instructor: Mrs. Gemma Dowd
This full year course offers a study of the incredible beauty of hand building techniques. Processes include: clay handling, joining, building and glazing. Using surface texture and design you will create 3-d functional pottery and sculptural forms.  Drying, surface finishing and glaze application is covered. We use white and dark clay, glazes are studied for color decoration and design enhancement. Some projects are given and note book logs are required to encourage good technique and design. Students are invited to expand on assignments and create their own designs and to participate in the kiln firing process. Come have fun and learn the stress relief of working in clay!

coil cylinder what to do with one.jpg
Ok, now HOW do you shape that cylinder! You are limited only by your imagination (and the kiln size)....Have fun! pay attention to the status of your pot's dryness/wetness to select a technique from what you have learned, hmmmm. Smile, be brave! and let yourself be inspired, think happy clay thoughts. Mrs.Dowd

sample pinch pot technique, remember not all work is completed in a sitting, you must allow the clay to harden (dry) in a controlled way and work on it when it is ready, sometimes the next day, etc. you are learning about the process in this exercise and the goal: even thickness
